Teaching methods

An emphasis on oracy
The materials depend on the use of an interactive whole-class teaching approach. There is a high oral content to every lesson (about two-thirds) and an emphasis on teaching through dialogue. Children are encouraged to demonstrate and explain to the class, often using the OHP (from Year 2 onwards). They are expected to explain the work clearly and fully to each other. Levels of teacher-pupil interaction are maximised.

Research evidence shows that this is crucial for progress in understanding. We make suggestions for classroom layout which maximise participation and interaction.

Having fun learning together
A co-operative, collaborative atmosphere among pupils is encouraged and developed. All children actively participate in every lesson. The scheme includes many exciting games (including starters), which increase enjoyment and enthusiasm.

Writing what you can already do in your head
Written tasks practise what children have learned orally.
The importance of accuracy is stressed in every aspect of the teaching and learning.
